ReferenceMSP Edition

Overview

XReplicator has two edition boundaries:

EditionTenant modelLicense scopeIntended use
Community EditionSingle tenantFree for up to 5 protected VMs for lifeOne organization protecting its own servers
MSP / Enterprise EditionMulti tenantGated commercial licenseMSPs and enterprises managing multiple customers, teams, or environments

MSP multi-tenancy, user management, and tenant isolation are not supported in the free Community Edition. Community is the default single-tenant product.

What Community Includes

Community Edition is designed for a single organization or lab environment:

  • One tenant / one organization
  • One backup server and web UI deployment
  • Up to 5 protected VMs for life
  • Windows and Linux block-level backups
  • File, partition, full disk, and Azure DR restore workflows
  • S3, GCS, Azure Blob, and MCP integration

Community does not include MSP tenant separation or per-tenant user access.

What MSP / Enterprise Adds

MSP / Enterprise Edition adds the controls needed to operate XReplicator across multiple customers or internal business units:

  • Multi-tenant MSP dashboard
  • Tenant isolation across customer environments
  • User management for operational teams
  • Tenant-scoped access to protected systems, snapshots, and operations
  • Commercial licensing beyond the 5 VM Community limit
  • Enterprise onboarding and support

Use MSP / Enterprise when one XReplicator deployment is used to manage more than one customer, department, or isolated operating environment.

Tenant Model

In MSP / Enterprise Edition, a tenant represents a customer or isolated environment. Tenant boundaries should be used for:

  • Customer separation in MSP operations
  • Separate business units inside one enterprise
  • Environments with separate operators or access policies
  • Reporting and operational ownership by customer or group

Operators should only receive access to the tenants they manage.

User Management

User management is an Enterprise capability. Use it when multiple operators need controlled access to the web UI.

Common access patterns:

User typeTypical access
MSP adminManage tenants, users, protected VMs, backup jobs, and restore operations
Tenant operatorManage assigned tenant workloads and day-to-day backup operations
Read-only reviewerInspect backup status, snapshots, and reports without making changes

Exact roles and permissions depend on the licensed Enterprise build and enabled features.

Licensing

The backup server enforces license entitlements.

  • Community licenses are single-tenant and capped at 5 protected VMs.
  • MSP / Enterprise licenses unlock multi-tenancy and user management.
  • Enterprise licenses may raise or remove the Community VM limit depending on the commercial agreement.

For license installation and troubleshooting, see Licensing.

When To Upgrade

Upgrade from Community to MSP / Enterprise when any of these are true:

  • You need to manage multiple customer environments.
  • You need separate users or operators inside the web UI.
  • You need tenant isolation for customer data or operations.
  • You need to protect more than 5 VMs.
  • You need commercial support, onboarding, or rollout guidance.
